Engravings

Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) or Salvador Domenech Felipe Jacinto Dalí and Domenech, the Marquis de Pubol was born in Figueres, Spain in 1904.

Dali showed the improbable art talent already at early age – his first personal exhibition in the hometown took place when Dali was only 14. Three years later he entered the San Fernando's Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid which he, however, did not manage to graduate from – in 1926 he was expelled for the haughty attitude towards teachers. In this time the young artist moves to Paris where he meets Pablo Picasso, Joán Miro and his lifelong companion and future wife – Gala (Elena Dmitriyevna Dyakonova).

Since 1929 he joined the Surrealist group of André Breton. From this time Dali was gradually forming the recognizable artist style which he showed in every kind of activity: while being a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, director or writer.

In 30-s, under the inspiration of Pablo Picasso, Dali began to engage his talent in etching. After he successfully performed several works, Picasso recommended Dali to the Swiss publisher Albert Skira who was looking for the illustrator for the Lautreamont’s "Les Chants de Maldoror ". Dali brilliantly had coped with a cycle of engravings, and went to United States where he met Pierre Argilet, the publisher, who has bought the whole series of his work.

This luck of fate started a long-term fruitfull collaboration that brought to the world a huge scope of issued illustrations to the classical and modern literature published by Pierre Argile. Among them – "Divine Comedy" of Dante Alighieri, "Don Quixote" of Miguel de Cervantes, "Faust" of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Guillaume Apollinaire and Pierre de Ronsar's poems, "Venus in Furs" of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and many others.

Created in the 1960th series of etchings of Faust, "Surrealistic Tauromachy", "Mythology", are included in the Golden Fund of engraving of the 20th century and have shown the great opportunities of various etching technics.

“Art HoldingTatiana Nikitina» gives a unique opportunity for true connoiseurs of Salvador Dalí, not only to see, but also to acquire these original works of the master.
